Man's first self portrait was his hand. Australia has a RICH history of stories told by the people called Aboriginal peoples. this name refers to the original people of Australia. Their stories are told in two methods. One by speaking or orally. The other, would be visually, by their DOT PAINTINGS.
These paintings are sometimes referred to as DREAM TIME painting as the Aboriginese (like the American Navaho), believe that this world is not the real world but that a dream world. When we sleep and dream we enter the real world. There their paintings express this both in imagery and method.
Now, some paintings are depictions of real animals, but color and design are based in decoration and the Dream Time.
The painting are nature based having landscapes and animals. These painters use a secret code though, for their paintings. The paintings where the landscapes become map like or in fact are maps, say to a water hole have depictions, abstract depictions of plants and rocks that point to the water hole or a safe place to sleep or whatever needs to be said.
The tools are fingers, sticks, poles, rods, brushes and an assorted mix of paints. the original paints were most likely plant based mixed with mud and saliva.
