6cm241.jpgJim Dine is a very prolific artist. He is one of my favorites because he goes where he needs to go. For instance, his flower drawings and painting were done for years basically in secret. Why, well he was a big macho artist and flowers? He also spent time in the back rooms of musems in Italy studying the statues. He drew them and redrew them. The results are below. He is an interpreter. He uses what ever tool he needs, sand paper ,electric erasers, add another sheet of paper or a piece of paper thats fine. He was one of the Pop Artists although he was more in the league with Raushenberg, johns and Rivers I think. His scupture would testify to that. he strikes me also as a bit of a shock artist especially early in his career. Something else, where some artist fell into a style or developed a style, Dine never really fell into that trap. His work, whatever it is has his unmistakable stamp on it. I feel to that stamp has an embedded history in drawing.
