Leonardo was another determined draftsman. determined to visually understand what he observed. I do not find his work as compelling as Michelangelo, but that is my opinion and the reasons are that his do not invite me to feel as Michelangelo's drawings do. Although the drawing above tells me a lot about what he was striving to describe.

there is empathy here. look at the eyes, the stare and then the lips. they are a simple wavy line then with some gray scaled hatching added.

the Horse, notice the contour of the rider and the gesture drawing in the back legs. the front hoof is transformed into a moving weighted object though not even finished.

notice the control of the contour lines and drawing in the stems up to the leaves

more gesture than contour so to that point I believe Leonardo was thinking visually, capturing his concept
