I think Wolf Kahn is a Modern Master, a Contemporary Master of the Impressionist Abstracted Landscape. And what a colorist. He is one of my favorites and he was a student of Hans Hoffman. Or would it be an abstracted Impressionist?

Pastel paintings, thats what we call pastels, but are they paintings, really? Why not drawings? Well, in the end I think both are mute points. They mean nothing except, the way one may think about them or want to categorize them. Pastel for me is very close to oil painting, especially thinly painted oils. I personally don't find this to be the same with acrylics. Maybe thinly painted acrylics, but the point is, these are done before Wolf paints his oils. they become studies while they are also become finished pieces unto them selves. They are beautiful pieces. One reason is that pastels handled a certain way make beautiful marks. They blend easily. They retain their brilliance and when layered you can read down into the pastel.

Wolf is a master at pastel.
